Air-to-air combat would never be the same when speed became an important component in future dogfights after the appearance of the first jet powered airplane, the German Messerschmitt Me 262 in WWII. The manufacturer of one of the most successful fighters from World War II, the P-51 Mustang, answered back with the introduction of transonic jet fight aircraft, the North American F-86 Sabre, produced by North American Aviation in 1947. Utilizing the seized German technology that was forfeited after the war, North American Aviation went to work designing the swept-back wing jet when, alternatively, didn't have the knowledge that the specific wing design made it considereably more stable at all speeds and faster after intially trying the P-51D wings, with not as great of a successful result. With the swept wing design, the aircraft was able to break the sound barrier and going to 671 miles per hour set the first official world speed record on September 15,1948 and saw extensive combat during the Korean War and the Cold War and serving in over 20 nations' military forces with over 7,800 produced worldwide.
