It only took 102 days after an initial order was commissioned by the British, for the North American Mustang to be imagined; even during a time of war, the prototype rolled off the manufacturing floor in September of 1940. Seeing a significant drop in performance above 15,000 feet, variations quickly followed to keep up with the battles that constantly took place above this elevation over Europe. The Mustang wasn't used by the United States until their oversight of lack in defence for when their day bomber formations started to become a beacon for the Luftwaffe, proving that remaining tried and true only allows the enemy an advantage and left the bombers vulnerable to future attacks. Once the Mustang started escorting the bombers, the roles were reversed and the Germans quickly saw themselves as the vulnerable ones as their fighters lacked the speed and altitude the Mustang had gained in their updates and were easily picked apart and shot down giving the Allies significant air superiority. Over the course of the war, the Mustang assumed many roles as far as air-to-combat to destroying enemy transports, the Mustang racked up over 10,000 airplanes destroyed in the air and on the ground and stood as one, if not the best, aircraft fighter to take to the skies and dominate to help change the outcome of WWII.
